What a compromised skin barrier actually is, how to tell if yours needs help, and the four weeks it takes to settle one with fewer products, not more.

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin, and its job is simple: keep water in and irritants out. When it is damaged, skin stings, flakes and reacts to products that used to be fine.

How to tell it needs help

Stinging when you apply a moisturiser you have used for years is the clearest sign. Tightness after cleansing, patches of dryness next to oily areas and redness that will not settle are the others.

The usual causes are over-exfoliating, too many actives at once and very hot water.

Repair is mostly about stopping. The skin already knows how to heal.

The four-week plan

For four weeks, use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser with ceramides and a sunscreen. Nothing else. No acids, no retinoids, no scrubs. Most guests see the stinging stop within ten days and the texture improve by week three.

A plain ceramide balm, the one product we recommend most often during repair.

Bringing things back

After four weeks, reintroduce one product at a time, a week apart. If the stinging returns, you have found the problem.

It is a slow method. It is also the only one we have seen work every time.
