Why your evening routine is probably too long

Our herbalist on cutting eleven steps down to three, and keeping the three. Why a shorter routine is easier on the skin and much easier to keep.

When guests show us their evening routine, it often runs to eight or ten products. Most of them overlap, a few work against each other, and nearly all of them are applied in a hurry.

Cleanse once, properly

A single thorough cleanse at night removes the day. Double cleansing makes sense if you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup, and very little sense if you do not.

Use lukewarm water. Hot water feels good and leaves the skin tighter than it should be.

Three steps you do every night will always beat eleven you do on Sundays.

Treat one thing at a time

Pick the concern that matters most this season and use one product for it. Layering three actives at once makes it impossible to tell which one is helping, and more likely that one of them irritates.

The pot of chamomile that replaced two serums in one guest's evening.

Then stop

Finish with a moisturiser suited to the weather and go to bed. Skin repairs itself overnight; it needs quiet more than it needs more product.

Our herbalist's own routine takes under three minutes. The tea afterwards takes longer.
