A perfect meal plan that goes uneaten has no nutritional value at all. We build menus around appetite, memory and pleasure first, then add the science to what someone will genuinely finish.
Appetite changes, and it is not stubbornness
Taste and smell both fade with age, medication frequently dulls them further, and the hormonal signals that create hunger weaken. Food that once tasted right now tastes of very little. Telling someone to eat more rarely works. Making food taste of something again usually does — herbs, lemon, pepper, vinegar, umami from cheese, mushrooms or tomato. Reach for salt last, not first.
Protein at every meal, not just at dinner
Muscle loss is the mechanism behind most losses of independence, and it accelerates sharply when protein is concentrated in one evening meal. Spread it: eggs or yoghurt at breakfast, something substantial at lunch, and a smaller evening plate. Older adults need noticeably more protein per kilogram than younger adults, not less.
Make the plate legible
For anyone with visual or cognitive changes, contrast matters enormously. Pale food on a white plate can be genuinely invisible. A coloured plate, a plain tablecloth, no patterned mats, and no more than two or three items on the plate at once — a crowded plate is often abandoned rather than started.
“We have watched intake double by changing nothing but the colour of the plate.”

Fix hydration before you fix anything else
The sensation of thirst weakens with age, and many older adults deliberately drink less to avoid night-time trips to the bathroom. Mild dehydration presents as confusion, fatigue and constipation, and it is regularly mistaken for decline. Put a filled glass within reach and in sight, offer drinks with every interaction rather than on a schedule, and remember that soup, fruit and yoghurt all count.
Eat with people
The most consistent predictor of adequate intake in older adults is not the menu. It is company. People eat more, for longer, when someone else is at the table. If a family visit can be arranged around a meal rather than after one, that is worth more than any supplement.
What to take away
Restore flavour, spread the protein, simplify the plate, keep fluid within reach and put someone at the table. Start with pleasure and let the nutrition follow — it almost always does.
